U2 Planning Free NYC Show
Posted on Friday, November 17 @ 16:46:54 CET by Macphisto

(Billboard.com) -- U2 will on Dec. 5, stage a free concert for 1,000 people at New York club Irving Plaza. Tickets to the planned hour-long show, which will be broadcast live nationally, will be given out by local radio station K-Rock (WXRK, 92.3FM) to listeners who hold one of the station's "92 Free" cards. The station made the announcement at 5:16 p.m. today (Nov. 17).
While a planned world tour won't launch until March 2001 in Miami, U2 has been playing select performances in recent weeks to promote the release of its ninth studio album, "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (Interscope). On Sept. 27, the Bono-led band performed a short set on top of the band-owned Clarence Hotel in Dublin, which was taped for broadcast on the BBC series "Top Of The Pops."
The band followed that appearance with a performance at Paris' Man Ray club, and on BBC's Radio 1, "Jimmy And Doug's Farmclub.com," MTV's "Total Request Live," and most recently, the MTV Europe Music Awards. U2 is also scheduled to play the "My VH1 Awards" Nov. 30 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
"All That You Can't Leave Behind" debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. album chart, and at No. 2 on The Billboard 200. First single, "Beautiful Day," is at No. 44 on The Billboard Hot 100 this week, and last week peaked on the Modern Rock Tracks chart at No. 5.
